I really enjoyed the voice acting - especially Norman Reedus & Troy Baker's parts. Death Stranding looks (and sounds) amazing. The graphics in this game are extremely, ridiculously polished. I'm not complaining, but they probably could've saved some money and stuck to the totally-competent in-house music that makes up most of the game's soundtrack. About 10% of the music is 25-year-old licensed Nine Inch Nails & Prodigy songs - and there's a "Streamer Mode" to replace those songs to prevent Twitch from copyright-striking you from space. There's also added character customization.įor a music-based game, the music mostly just kind of sinks into the background, and you just pay attention to the beat. It looks like there's a decent New Game+ endgame that has you going back to each level to do battle challenges hidden behind previously-locked (and often well-hidden) doors. Luckily, each phase served as a checkpoint I'd come back to after I died (over & over & over).Ī fair amount of new stuff unlocks after the credits roll. The final few bosses were really tough for me to beat on the default difficulty, and had like 5 phases each. Gameplay seems simple at first, but by the end has you juggling a lot of different mechanics (theoretically to the beat, if you actually have rhythm unlike me). I never actually watched Avatar: The Last Airbender as a kid, but the art style seems reminiscent of that. For whatever reason, every time I saw it recommended, though, I always confused it with "To the Moon". It's included in every single "Short Games You Must Play" list on the internet. There's definitely an audience for games like this. Oh, and occasionally, they want you to listen to cassette tapes of the bad punk music Katies girlfriend sings. And sometimes Katie will give a narrative elaborating on the exact nature of the googly eyes. These scraps detail each and every time in high school that you made googly eyes at the cute rebel girl from the city. Once you do that, you move Bibles & clues of your parents' failing marriage out of the way so you can read the scraps of paper that are strewn everywhere around the house. Your goal? Walk around the obnoxiously dark house, fumbling to turn on the lights. When you get home, you find that your family's mansion is empty. You play Katie, a girl who just got back from her family-tradition mommy-and-daddy-funded solo-trip to Europe between high school & college. Yakuza 0 is a great game! Though now I need to cleanse my palate with about a dozen 2hr games before I dive into another 60hr Yakuza-fest. Somehow, at a time when I was truly feeling burnt out from long games, this one just kept pulling me in. Somehow, at a time when I was truly feeling burnt out from long games, this one just kept … More It's like chess, but completely impenetrable to someone who can't read Japanese characters. The minigames range from fun & addictive crack (bowling & darts) to a tedious slog (the real estate side-game & slot racing). And Majima is dutifully working along with this dude who openly wants to murder him. You've got Kiryu being all respectful toward the dudes trying to kill/frame him. For example, you've got the side-missions centering around sex trafficking where Kiryu essentially says, "Oh, you scamps!" And rather than help the victim like he does in every other side mission, he just lets them go about their sex trafficking thing.Īlso, the main characters' respect for authority no matter what leads them to make some truly odd decisions that steer the story forward. There are some weird thematic choices that maybe seem normal in Japan, but really stand out to us Westerners. Badasses that like to play tons of Outrun in the arcade, or sit around racing toy cars against elementary schoolers. The main storyline is good, and not in a nonsensical JRPG-story sort of way. Libido says "Hi") and also a gut-punching tear-jerker of a story. Somehow, these Yakuza games can be simultaneously the most hilariously stupid thing in the world (Mr. My only gripe, and the thing that keeps it from being a 5-star game, is the lack of English voice acting. And like that game, Yakuza 0 is pretty great. This was my second Yakuza game after Y7: Like a Dragon.
